EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) and XANES (X-Ray Absorption Near Edge structure) are regions of the spectrum obtained from XAS(X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy). EXAFS corresponds to the oscillating part of the spectrum to the right of the absorption edge(appearing as a sudden, sharp peak), starting at roughly 50 eV and extending to about 1000 eV above the edge (shown in Figure 1).

This project is sometimes called Feff8L or Feff85exafs. The "L" implies "Lite" (as in diluted beer, not illumination), "85" comes from the version of Feff (8.5) that this version is derived from, and "exafs" is because this version is used to calculate EXAFS only -- not XANES or other core-level spectroscopies.

An excellent description of the principles and data analysis techniques of EXAFS is given by Teo (1986). XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure), The EXAFS Equation To model the EXAFS, we use the EXAFS Equation: χ(k) = X j N jf j(k)e −2k2σ2 j kR j 2 sin[2kR j + δ j(k)] where f (k) and δ(k) are photo-electron scattering properties of the neighboring atom. (The sum is over “shells” of similar neighboring atoms). If we know these properties, we can determine: R distance to neighboring atom. EXAFS XANES or NEXAS XAFS can be interpreted as due to scattering of the photo-electron ejected from the absorbing atom by the photo-electric effect. XAFS is commonly divided into the ‘near edge’ region (XANES or NEXAFS) and the ‘extended’ region (EXAFS) Mainly single scattering contributions Multiple scattering contributions XAFS EXAFS analysis is based on the backscattering of electron waves from atomic neighbors surrounding a central atom, which is excited by an x-ray photon of the appropriate energy.

This page shows how to set up such a calculation. In fact, there are three separate approaches: This project is sometimes called Feff8L or Feff85exafs. The "L" implies "Lite" (as in diluted beer, not illumination), "85" comes from the version of Feff (8.5) that this version is derived from, and "exafs" is because this version is used to calculate EXAFS only -- not XANES or other core-level spectroscopies. EXAFS gives you short range information about the local structure of the core atom. So, if you have all possible model for the expected or suspected changes in structure of material, you can The EXAFS range extends usually about 400-1000 eV above the edge due to limitations caused by experimental noise and/or by the presence of another absorption edge. To measure the X-ray absorption spectrum, one needs to have an X-ray source.

EXAFS: Basic Principles and Data Analysis represents my modest attempt to fill such a gap. In this book, I aim to introduce the subject matter to the novice and to help alleviate the confusion in EXAFS data analysis, which, although becoming more and more routine, is still a rather tricky endeavor and may, at times, discourage the beginners.

EXAFS spectroscopy is the method of choice for structural characterization of very small supported clusters [ 244 ], [ 245 ]. Because a large fraction of the metal species is in contact with the support, a notable part of the EXAFS signals is due to metal-support contributions, thus providing information about the metal-support interface.

Information Content of EXAFS According to information theory, the maximum amount of information contained in an EXAFS Fourier transform is given by: For good (but not great) EXAFS data, Δk might typically be 10 Å-1 and ΔR might be 4 Å, yielding about 25 independent points. So, … EXAFS XANES or NEXAS XAFS can be interpreted as due to scattering of the photo-electron ejected from the absorbing atom by the photo-electric effect. XAFS is commonly divided into the ‘near edge’ region (XANES or NEXAFS) and the ‘extended’ region (EXAFS) Mainly single scattering contributions Multiple scattering contributions XAFS The EXAFS experimental data used in the fitting is denoted by E(k) and it is calculated by after reading the k and c (k) data from the experimental data file. The weighting factor n has to be given in the *.dat file, and it is a small integer usually between 1 and 3. An EXAFS measurement averages billions of snapshots of the local structure: Each absorbed x-ray generates 1 photo-electron.
